A Gift

We are so happy to offer our community a FREE yoga class on Monday nights at 6:00. Come join our teachers-in-training and find out for yourself how great yoga is!! Give yourself the gift of health and peace. You deserve it!

I think the following poem speaks so wonderfully to the season of giving coming up...

A Gift

May your days be fulfilling,
And your nights be thrilling.

May every venture,
Become an adventure.

May you walk the land,
And play in the sand.

May you sail the oceans,
And drink magical potions.

May you splash and have fun,
Under an endless summer sun.

May you hear the violins
In soft, warm winds.

May you dance to flutes,
And taste exotic fruits.

May your heart overflow,
Everywhere you go.

May your limits be tested,
And your best day be bested.

May your moments of glory,
Be retold in a story.

May your life be blessed,
And good fortune be your guest.

Merry Christmas to all!!!

Meditation with Hari Das

STILL YOUR MIND! Tame those annoying thoughts, thoughts, thoughts!!!!!!!!!

Hari Das is a "regular" at Satya!

Join us the last Sunday of the month - next session is November 30 - when he comes to our center to lead us in meditation and spiritual teaching.

Hari Das has been studying, practicing and teaching meditation since 1976, and has been a resident at the Vivekananda Monastery in Ganges, MI since 1994. To learn more about the Monastary, click here: http://www.vedantasociety-chicago.org/ganges_hist.htm

He will speak on meditation techniques & styles, the 8 Limbs of Yoga, the Bhagavad Gita and the yoga sutras, followed by a guided meditation. We will conclude with a question and answer session.

Hari Das is a firm advocate of meditation, and agrees it is life changing. "Not only does it relieve stress and angst of the mind and body, it also clears the mind for absolute awareness, and is truly essential to every day living."

Peace to you.

All About Thanksgiving - Food & Detox

November 23, 2008

Yes, it is Thanksgiving ALREADY! One of my favorite holidays because it's nondenominational and all about gratitude - Be grateful for EVERY day!!!!!!

We are proud of our fundraising efforts here at Satya! Thank you to all who donated during our Thanksgiving FOOD DRIVE. All donations went to the Center for Women in Transition and the Holland Rescue Mission. Remember, as an individual, we can create change in our community, although, as a community, we can create change globally.

The following "lesson" has been passed around before, however, it is still a good reminder.

If you could fit the entire population of the world into a village consisting of 100 people,
maintaining the proportions of all the people living on Earth, that village would consist of

57 Asians
21 Europeans
14 Americans (North, Central and South)
8 Africans
There would be: 52 women and 48 men

30 Caucasians and 70 non-Caucasians 30 Christians
and 70 non-Christians
89 heterosexuals and
11 homosexuals
6 people would possess 59% of the wealth and they would all come from the USA
80 would live in poverty

70 would be illiterate
50 would suffer from hunger and malnutrition
1 would be dying
1 would be being born
1 would own a computer
1 (yes, only one) would have a university degree
If we looked at the world in this way, the need for acceptance and understanding would be obvious.
But, consider again the following :
If you woke up this morning in good health, you have more luck than one million people, who won’t live through the week.
If you have never experienced the horror of war, the solitude of prison, the pain of torture, were not close to death from starvation, then you are better off than 500 million people.
If you can go to your place of worship without fear that someone will assault or kill you, then you are luckier than 3 billion (that’s right) people.
If you have a full fridge, clothes on your back, a roof over your head and a place to sleep, you are wealthier than 75% of the world’s population.
If you currently have money in the bank, in your wallet and a few coins in your purse, you are one of 8 of the privileged few amongst the 100 people in the world.
If your parents are still alive and still married, you’re a rare individual.
AND SO?
Work like you don’t need the money.

Love like nobody has ever hurt you.

Dance like nobody is watching.

Sing like nobody is listening.

Live as if this was paradise on Earth.

For those of you working on the grocery list, here a couple delicious twists on the traditional thanksgiving dinner fare... and fairly healthy too!

Vanilla Mashed Sweet Potato Recipe

1 1/2 pounds sweet potatoes, cleaned and left a bit damp
1/2 cup plus 3 tablespoons heavy cream
1/3 vanilla bean, split lengthwise and seeds scraped
1 teaspoon grated orange zest (optional)
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature
kosher saltwhite pepper in a mill
Preheat the oven to 350F. Put the potatoes on a baking sheet and bake in the oven until tender to a fork tip, about 1 hour. Remove from oven and let cook until warm enough to handle, 10 to 15 minutes. Peel and discard the skin. Put the potatoes in the bowl of a food processor fitted with the steel blade.
Meanwhile, pour the cream into a 2-quart pot, add the vanilla bean and orange zest, if using, and set it over medium heat. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes. Remove from heat. Use tongs to fish out and discard the vanilla bean. Pour the mixture over the potatoes in the processor and add the butter.
Puree the potato mixture until smooth. Season with salt and 4 grinds of pepper, or to taste. Keep covered and warm until ready to serve.
Serves four.

Autumn Spice Oil
4 star anise
1/2 tablespoon juniper berries
1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon cardamom
1 teaspoon allspice1 medium cinnamon stick, crushed, or 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon whole cloves
1/3 vanilla bean, split lengthwise, seeds scraped
2 pieces dried orange peel,
1 cup oil (note: I used olive oil - a mild tasting one)

Put the star anise, juniper berries, cardamom, allspice, cinnamon, and cloves in an 8-inch saute pan and toast overmedium heat, shaking constantly, until fragrant, 2 to 3 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and let cool.
Transfer the spices to a spice or coffee grinder and pulse for a few seconds.
Transfer the spices to a bowl, add the vanilla bean and orange peel, if using, and set aside.
Pour the oil into a small pot and heat it over medium-low heat until warm. Pour the oil over the spices and vanilla. Cover and let infuse at room temperature for 24 hours, periodically mixing the bowl. (Cover and keep at room temperature for up to 2 weeks or refrigerate for up to 1 month.
Makes 1 cup.

Vibrant Tasty Green Bean Recipe - This is an easy one skillet recipe that skips all the dairy and the beans are not cooked beyond recognition

The following recipe is best made just before serving time.

4 leeks, well washed, root end and tops trimmed, sliced lengthwise into quarters and then chopped into 1/2-inch segments
1/3 cup fresh dill, well chopped
3/4 pound green beans, tops and tails trimmed and cut into 1-inch segments
extra-virgin olive oil
fine-grain sea salt

In a large thick-bottomed skillet of medium-high heat add a generous splash of olive oil, a generous pinch of salt and the leeks. Stir until the leeks are coated and glossy. Cook, stirring regularly until a lot of the leeks are golden and crispy. I stir every minute or two in the beginning, and more often as they brown using a metal spatula. All in all it takes me roughly 7 - 10 minutes to brown the leeks. At this point stir in the dill, and then stir in the green beans. Cook for a couple more minutes - just until the the beans brighten up and lose that raw bite. Turn out into a bowl or onto a platter and serve immediately.

Serves about 6.

Ok, so you had good intentions to eat in moderation... is that really possible on this glorious day devoted to FOOD!

Don't worry - Come to our "day after thanksgiving" detox class:

Halloween Dash & Smash

October 31, 2008

Satya Adventure Club celebrates Halloween with a DASH & SMASH!
"Dash" around town in our costumes, and then get "Smashed" - kidding! - at the local pub in Saugatuck. We were dressed like our running coach Marylynn complete with blonde wigs, green headband, fanny packs - including first aid kits, a whistle, and anything else you could possibly need - a leash around our waist with stuffed dogs named Polly and Otto (her dogs), and huge headphones with alien sized antennas -- it was a riot! Everyone around town was stumped as to WHO we were - but we knew, and had a great time! We ran one mile for every 100 calories consumed in chocolate - which left us running till dawn (well it felt that way!). Afterwards, we got smashed on french fries, liquid carbs, and had loads of fun in town! BTW - the donkey was Marylynn icognito! She cheated!

Summer Indoor-Picnic Concert Series

SUMMER BAREFOOT INDOOR CONCERT SERIES

Summer, 2008

We were so very happy to welcome a couple of great musical artists this summer to our center
On August 29, over 60 people kicked back with their blankets & refreshments taking in the exquisite talent of jazz vocalist JENNA MAMMINA. Originally from Michigan, Jenna tours the entire country sharing her stuff. We were captured by her beautiful spirit & voice! And in her spare time, she even teaches yoga in St. Joe, MI!
And then there was Brian!
On October 18, BRIAN CUTEAN (aka QTN) stopped over in Saugatuck to entertain and amuse us with his music & stories. A former Austinite, Seattlite, Chicagoan, and these days, Oregonian, the troubadour traveler is a many faceted minstrel, a teller of wild tales filled with wordplay, wonder and powerful and colorful guitar chops, an award-winning songwriter-performer, and an unusual and thoughtful real voice in these days of mass-produced music. Yes! What a trip.

Yoga For Children

KIDS YOGA

START YOUNG!!!

Yoga is for everyone... even children.

On August 16, Kim Vulinovic, a certified YogaKids teacher based out of Oak Park, IL hosted a workshop designed especially for kids. Kim also co-facilitated our 1st YogaKids Workshop with Marsha Wenig, founder of YogaKids (http://www.yogakids.com/) back in June. Our little ones loved it - yogis in the making!!!!!!!

Average Joe Green Workshop

We had a great time at our "Green" workshop. Ken Freestone (shown right) shared a very simple but comprehensive approach to composting, which inspired us to run right home and start our own piles. Dan Broersma (shown left) ran us through an entire average day, giving us tips and suggestions for greening up our entire lives. We left full of information, but not overwhelmed at all, feeling like anyone can do this and make a difference.
You can find more great information on Ken's website, www.greenwestmichigan.org.

Special thanks to Mike Harju and Shoreline Container for sponsoring our event!

LIVESTRONG!

Our June fundraiser was a huge success! Thanks so much for all who donated, both in the studio and online. With your help we were able to add our support to the fight against cancer!

Adventure Club - Corpse Pose

July, 2008
The Adventure Club runners were “dead” after running the trails at Saugatuck Dunes State Park on a hot and humid July afternoon. The three “M’s”, Marylynn, Michele and Maryann decided the “Corpse Pose” in the gravel parking lot would be the perfect ending to a perfect run, while Teresa "stretched out" (her words -- really she took a nap!!) in the back of Michele's Subaru! Teresa took this picture and vowed to kill the three M’s if they hadn’t already died on their own, for taking her on such a grueling adventure.

The Adventure Club is a group of enthusiasts - led by coach Marylynn - who do it ALL! Running, biking, walking, hiking, swimming, yoga, boot camp. Circuit training is an awesome way to have FUN (never boring!) and get in shape. Check out our website for details or show up at the center any Friday at 5:30 for an excellent work-out!

Marsha Wenig comes to Satya!

Marsha, Marsha, Marsha..... We had a fantastic time with Marsha! Shown in the picture above (left to right) are Jane, Ami, Marsha, Kim , and Michele.

Many, many thanks to Marsha Wenig and Kim Vulinovic for making our YogaKids weekend so much fun! We had a great turn-out for our Taste of YogaKids seminar and our family class and made some great new friends in the process. Marsha and Kim were fantastic teachers, so much fun, with wonderful, contagious energy! We came away from their classes having learned so much!

Check our out yoga shop for YogaKids DVDs, books signed by Marsha Wenig, and Tools for Schools products. We love it!

Also, check out Marsha's web site http://www.yogakids.com/ for more YogaKids gear. Ask us about The Garden Game....our kids won't stop playing it! (Seriously, won't stop!)

Seva

Here at Satya, we're all about seva (service). We believe it's our responsibility to take our yoga "off the mat and into the world". That's why we've taken on a few new pet projects:

First, we've made the commitment to collect art supplies in the studio for Susan Hansford, one of our students. Susan travels once a month (!!!) to teach art to children in an orphanage in Morocco. Talk about taking your yoga into the world! We've pledged to collect any and all art supplies we can for Susan to share with these children. We'll be accepting paper, construction paper, glue, glitter (this one is huge for these kids!), tape, paints, whatever. Susan says broken crayons are ok, half-colored coloring books-whatever you've got laying around the house. These children have so little and are excited about everything. Please consider sharing some of your used (or new!) art supplies with them.

Also, at the Midwest Yoga Conference in May, Seane Corn shared with us how she's sponsoring two children in an orphanage in Cambodia. A donation of $100 a month feeds, clothes, houses and schools these children. We, at Satya Yoga Center, would like to join in this service. With your help we can raise this money each month and make a difference in a child's life. We have a container on our counter at the reception area for donations. Consider dropping in your spare change, a few dollars, whatever you can spare.

You can check out their web site at http://www.cambodianchildrensfund.org/ for more information. Again, these children have so little and we, as Americans, have so much in comparison. When we've reached our goal we'll be able to sponsor our child and will have pictures and emails from our child to share with all of you.
Interested in serving? Check out Off The Mat, Into the World at http://www.offthematintotheworld.org/ for ways to bring your practice to another level. Their motto is "Why stretch when we can reach?" We love that!
Please consider opening your hearts and supporting us in our seva. It is our responsibility as yogis to continue the abundance to those less fortunate. Namaste!

GI Jane & Joe Boot Camp

Pictured are a few of the 'survivors' of the GI Jane & Joe Bootcamp which took place Memorial Day weekend. Needless to say, the seven-year old boys had the crab-walk down! Cars were stopping to check us out, and a few customers at Wild Dog (next store) were laughing with us (or were they laughing at us???).......Join us beginning in June on Sundays at 2pm in the outside courtyard.

Dalai Lama

A group of Satya teachers and students were lucky enough to see the Dalai Lama in Ann Arbor in May. What was most memorable was his kind smile, wonderful sense of humor, his words of wisdom, and his ability to make everyone happy just by looking their way.....
Oftentimes he would whisper to the monks seated around him, and all would start giggling! Truly enlightened beings!
(Oh, and Richard Gere was sitting in the front row. Just thought we'd mention that too!) Ask us all about it...we'd love to share!

Midwest Yoga Conference!

What a weekend! For those who don't know, (and how that's possible we don't know because we've told everyone we've come in contact with!) Michele and I (Ami) are at the Midwest Yoga conference in Chicago. We are having a blast, learning lots, meeting people and networking in our spare time.

Really special thanks to Caren Miller who cracked us up and helped us fulfill our be.ology jones. The folks from be.ology will be at our center in the upcoming months (date TBA) to present the philosophy behind their line of clothing, as well as help you fill your closet. You can check out their web site at http://www.beologyonline.com/. Because of the sincerity of their intentions they're attracting the attention of of yoga boutiques across the world as well as celebrities such as Oprah, Ellen DeGeneres, and master yoga teacher Seane Corn, who has her own line of shirts, be.involved, which benefit Youth Aids.

We spent Friday in Detox with Seane Corn. (And yes, it's Sunday and we're still Detoxing!) Seane is a very dynaminc, in your face, teacher who really puts herself out there in her teachings. We love her! Her passion and energy were very contagious and we even made it through the "universally despised core section" of the practice, which Michele and I will be sharing with you in our Power, Advanced and Detox classes. Ask us about "miserable heifer"pose. Check her out at http://www.seanecorn.com/.

Saturday morning was Yin yoga with Paul Grilley. Yin yoga is a style of yoga where the poses are held for an extended period of time to release the connective tissues. It consists almost entirely of floor poses, targeting the hips, legs, pelvis and spine. So, imagine Pigeon (which in Yin yoga is called "swan") for 5 minutes (or more). We started on the right leg and when we switched to the left leg we were experiencing the left/right imbalance that we all have. Paul taught us this mantra to deal with feelings of frustration over this. He asked that we repeat each line after him:

"I am the only one.
Something is wrong with me.
I am inadequate in some way.
Shanti Om"

Needless to say, we were all laughing so hard we could hardly breathe. He also taught us how important it is to look around and compare ourselves to everyone else, how we should never listen to our bodies and always bow to authority figures when in doubt about alignment. I can not begin to stress how funny and refreshing he is. Paul's class was absolutely life changing and we can't wait to train with him again. The lessons we've learned here will be carrying over into our classes as well. Listen for the "I am the only one" mantra in your class soon.

We rounded out the rest of the morning with Yang yoga (also with Paul Grilley), where we learned a style of yoga very unlike anything we'd experienced before. We're hooked! We were in a packed room where, again, Paul cracked us up. "When you fall, it's very important that you take as many people as you can out with you." His wife Suzee was awesome, leading us through sequence after sequence and always ready to challenge us with something new. We came away from this class just completely addicted and ready to share Yang yoga with you. Watch for "the gecko", a great new twist on chaturanga.

For more on Paul Grilley check out his web site at http://www.paulgrilley.com/.

Our last class on Saturday was something we were a little unsure about. We took "Wild and Precious Life" with Sean Johnson and the Wild Lotus Band. We went into this class not knowing what to expect as we were asked to bring a journal to class with us, were told Sean would use kirtan, storytelling, poetry and live music with a vigorous vinyasa practice. We started off with kirtan, warmed up on our backs and then were asked to write answers to questions in a journal. Sean read poetry to us as we practiced and the Wild Lotus Band played in the background. Sean encouraged us to make this practice our own and gave us time during the poses to "do something that surprises you", before finishing with kirtan. We came away from this class deeply moved and inspired. Check out Sean at http://www.seanjohnsonkirtan.com/.

As you can see, we've been busy here. Ask us about our trip.....like you can stop us from telling you. Pictures coming soon!

Also, check out our web site (http://www.satyayogacenter.net/) for special discounts just for our students at Everything Yoga.com. You can get a $10 off coupon to use online when you sign up for their newsletter.

Happy Earth Day!

What You Can Do to Practice Lightly on the Earth For Yoga Practitioners:

Walk, bike, bus or carpool to class.

Bring a reusable water bottle to class.

Reuse rather than discard your old yoga mats and other props (see below for how to recycle old yoga mats).

Seek out yoga products and clothing that are produced without using toxic chemicals, pesticides or nonrenewable resources.

Encourage your local studio to offer non-toxic yoga products and organic clothing, and commit to the list below.

Learn more about the traditional yoga principal of "ahimsa" (non-harm) and how you can apply this in practice in your life.

Reycling old yoga mats:

Drop off your old mat at an animal rescue group. Most of these places need soft, durable mats, rugs, towels, & blankets to line crates.

Cut your mat into circles or squares. Use as a grip pad for opening jars, a cushion for your knees while gardening, for underneath the legs of furniture to protect wood floors, or underneath rugs on slippery floors.

Use your mat on the beach instead of a towel.

Use your mat under your sleeping bag while camping.

Cut into coasters for your coffee table. You can also use it under your plants to catch drips.

Put your mat over your car seat to keep your pets from slipping around on leather seats.

Reduce, reuse, recycle! Happy Earth Day from Satya Yoga Center!

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary Fundraiser

Each month, Satya Yoga Center chooses a charity to support. For March, we chose Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. We give 100% of the proceeds of our fundraiser to the cause we choose, as well as donating our time and energy to promoting it.

We had a fantastic turn-out in March, so much more than we could have imagined! We stopped counting people at about 70 and we also had 13 dogs come to visit! Many of the dogs invited were available to be adopted so, if you see someone you're interested in, please let us know! We'd love to be able play matchmaker for you and your new best friend!

We started the evening just spending time getting to know each dog and letting the dogs get to know each other. Everyone did great! We followed that up with a video detailing Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. "The sanctuary, at the heart of Southern Utah's Golden Circle of national parks, is home, on any given day, to about 1,500 dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, birds and other animals." (from the Best Friends web site http://www.bestfriends.org/). We also had experts in attendance (Dr. Ray from Mac's Landing in Fennville http://www.macslanding.com/ and Deb Scanzillo from Dogs Bay Country Club for dogs http://www.dogsbay.net/) who donated their time for a question and answer session.

Thank you so much to all who donated, who attended, who brought food, who brought dogs! We couldn't have done it without you! Extra thanks to Michele for all her hard work, and her sassy fashion sense!

To donate to Best Friends click here: https://www.bestfriends.org/donate/index.cfm?

Next month: Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund.

St. Jude Children's Hospital Fundraiser

Each month Satya Yoga Center puts on a fundraiser for the charity of our choice. Our choices are inspired by real people and from real experiences. We donate 100% of our proceeds to the cause of the month.

For February, our owner, Michele, chose St. Jude Children's Hospital. With St. Jude "your donation makes a real difference. During the past three years, 85 percent of every dollar received by ALSAC/St. Jude has gone to the current or future needs of St. Jude." (from St. Jude's web site, http://www.stjude.org/).

We started our evening with a short video profiling the follow-up visit of a young cancer survivor. We toured the hospital with her as she pointed out points of interest and spoke to real life parents of St. Jude's children. The video showed children undergoing treatment as well as the parents supporting them. It was heartbreaking and inspiring.

After our video we practiced together to honor those children, as well as to honor those who had lost their lives to their diseases. Our children ran through the studio, chasing balloons and giggling, as we practiced, adding to the experience for us. Michele reminded us all to dedicate our asana to the children and to delight in the laughter of those around us. It was a very moving practice.

We ended the evening casually, practicing some partner yoga together and sharing some snacks. New relationships were forged and old friendships strengthened. We were able to raise money for a worthy cause as well as to connect with our fellow yogis.

To donate to St. Jude, click here:

Next month: Paws for a Cause with our Best Friends Animal Sanctuary fundraiser!

Welcome to Satya Yoga Center!

SATYA YOGA CENTER is a space devoted to the promotion of health of mind, body & spirit.

It is a Center where all are welcome.

We work hard to create an environment where people can feel liberated, accepted and at peace.

In yogic philosophy, SATYA is one of the traditional “yamas”, or ethical codes for living.

It means truthfulness.

Truthfulness to ourselves, in speaking out loud, and living honestly.

The SATYA YOGA CENTER is a place of well-being where people can retreat, and work on developing and re-connecting to their true selves. SATYA is also the emblem of many peaceful social movements, particularly those centered on social justice and environmentalism.

Our goal is to be a local community 'health' center, where everyone is welcome, everyone feels at home, and, as a community we learn how to better ourselves and the world we live in. We opened our doors on August 1, 2007, and received a wonderful welcome from our beautiful lakeside community!

At SATYA Center, we are blessed with over 1,400 square feet of tranquil space. Light pours through the tall windows, and overlooks the surrounding woods, inviting the sights and sounds of mother nature.

We offer ample parking, and are very easy to find. The Center is contemporary in style, and earth-friendly. It is complimented with a landscaped courtyard and nestled nicely into the woods.

Satya Yoga Center offers a variety of classes and is open 7 days a week! Come check us out in person or online at http://www.satyayogacenter.net/.
